MUNA Don’t Need Validation From Fancy Parties On New Song “So What”

Indie-pop outfit MUNA have returned today with “So What,” the second track unveiled from their upcoming fourth studio record, Dancing On the Wall, which drops on May 8. Crafted by the trio—Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson, with production handled by the band—this synth-pop anthem explores the realization that rubbing elbows with the elite isn't a cure-all for your personal struggles.
“We’ve reached a stage where we’ve frequented numerous glitzy gatherings in stunning venues surrounded by influential figures, and we’ve experienced the distinct disappointment of discovering that it doesn’t improve your state of mind,” the group shared in a press release. “We’ve learned the hard way that external validation is hollow, and what we’re truly seeking is genuine intimacy. This track captures the feeling of attending such an event and walking away feeling worse than when we arrived.”
In the opening section, MUNA’s frontwoman Gavin arrives at the scene sporting Maison Margiela. Things appear to be looking up.
The party, the premiere
The opening, I get invited
The black dress, the necklace
MM6, it’s all included
Gavin seems to be enjoying herself midway through the verse—or at least, that’s the facade she presents.
And there’s a lot of people here tonight
With their best shoes on drinking for free
There’s a lot of people here tonight
And most of them would want to go home with me
During the pre-chorus, Gavin continues to project an air of total confidence.
It’s alright, it all worked out
Lots of people love me now
Lots of people
And all is well that’s ending well
And I feel great if you can’t tell
Lots of people
However, when the chorus hits, it’s evident she is longing for a real bond with a specific individual. None of the superficial perks of this upscale socialite event can replace that.
Love me (So what, if you don’t)
If you don’t (If you don’t), if you don’t (If you don’t)
Love me (So what, if you don’t)
I won’t even notice if you don’t (If you don’t)
Love me (So what, if you don’t)
If you don’t love me
Love me now
In the accompanying visual for “So What,” the members of MUNA enjoy champagne while wandering through Los Angeles, chasing something they cannot quite grasp.
