Anne Hathaway Releases New Song “Burial,” Written With Charli xcx and Jack Antonoff

Charli xcx is currently riding a massive wave of success. She recently dominated the U.K. album charts with Wuthering Heights, her critically acclaimed soundtrack for the movie of the same name, and she has several acting roles lined up, including a part in The Gallerist, which features Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega. She also contributed to the songwriting for A24’s Mother Mary—a film starring Anne Hathaway as a pop icon—and today marks the release of the movie’s lead single. Titled “Burial,” this track is a chilly dance-pop anthem crafted by Charli, Hathaway, Jack Antonoff, and George Daniel.
The three individuals who co-wrote the song with Hathaway also handled production duties, and the record captures the same dark, enigmatic atmosphere showcased in the film’s trailer. During the opening verse, Hathaway—who has demonstrated her vocal talents in various films, most notably in 2012’s Les Misérables, which earned her an Oscar—adopts a breathy, whispered delivery to frame herself as a lethal romantic force.
I’ll kill you softly
So sweetly, kindly
I’m mesmerizing, it’s terrifying
The energy intensifies during the pre-chorus, as Hathaway appears to lean into the emotional turmoil her character is enduring.
This black suit fits like a glove, I was born to be the widow of love
Won’t lose myself to a touch, I was born to be the widow of love
This black suit fits like a glove, I was born to be the widow of love
My red heart free like a dove, but you tell me that it’s never enough
There is a distinct coldness to the way she belts out the chorus.
This is your burial (Ah-ah, uh-uh)
This is your burial (Ah-ah, uh-uh)
This is your burial
She issues further cautionary remarks to any potential lovers throughout the second verse.
Don’t come closer
I’ll push you further
I’m mesmerizing, a brutal lover (Oh)
