Following a string of social media hints, Kacey Musgraves has confirmed that her sixth studio collection, Middle of Nowhere, is set for a May 1 release. She has also debuted the project's primary single, “Dry Spell,” a track composed—like the remainder of the record—through the singer's longest stretch of being single. During this period, the Texas-born star cherished the opportunity to “be solitary and exist in an environment free from external definitions.”

“I became intrigued by the notion of liminality, both in a physical and psychological sense,” Musgraves shared via press statement. “We rarely linger in these transitional, hollow phases, preferring to rush toward whatever comes next. I grew quite comfortable existing in the ‘middle of nowhere’ in various ways and embracing the unease of an undefined state. It gave me plenty of space for artistic exploration and self-discovery; through horses, humor, reconnecting with my original collaborators, and maintaining a humble, inspired life between Texas, Tennessee, and Mexico.”

Musgaves co-wrote “Dry Spell” alongside Luke Laird, Shane McAnally, and Josh Osborne, while the production was helmed by Musgraves, Laird, Daniel Tashian, and Ian Fitchuk. Although Kacey is renowned for her musical versatility, “Dry Spell” is a fairly straightforward, rootsy country number featuring her signature sharp wit as she laments her lack of intimacy. Lately, she seems to find more satisfaction in the laundry room than anywhere else.

It has been a truly endless three-hundred and thirty-five days
And the last encounter wasn't worth writing home about anyway
I’m feeling so lonely, lonely with a capital “H”
If you catch my drift, I’ve been perched up on the washing machine

Through this chorus, Kacey invites us into her world of clever double entendres, where she is the sole resident.

There is nobody’s tool sitting in my shed
There are no man’s boots tucked under my bed
There is nobody’s truck parked in my drive
No late-night visitor to help me feel alive
There are no fresh notches added to my belt
And I’m frustrated with keeping my hands to myself
911, this is officially a plea for some help
Honestly, I’m enduring a dry spell, yeah

She continues to vocalize her restlessness throughout the second verse.

So, tell me, what is a self-respecting woman supposed to do?
I’ve got the bacon, but there’s no one here to share it with, it’s true
It’s a complete drought, just waiting for the rain to start
I suppose it’s time I take charge and follow my heart

In the official video for “Dry Spell,” Kacey embarks on a suggestive excursion to the grocery store.

Middle of Nowhere showcases guest appearances from Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert, Billy Strings, and Gregory Alan Isakov, and is described as a “sonic tribute to the diverse frontiers of Country music.”
