Charli xcx might not be the immediate choice that comes to mind for a 19th-century tale of brooding romance across the West Yorkshire moors, yet she has just dropped the album Wuthering Heights. This collection serves as her original score for director Emerald Fennell’s latest cinematic take on Emily Brontë’s iconic novel. This 12-track project features previously unveiled singles like “House” (alongside John Cale), “Wall of Sound,” and “Chains of Love,” while Sky Ferreira makes a guest appearance on “Eyes of the World.”

At first, Fennell only requested a single track from Charli for the film. However, upon diving into the screenplay, the dance-pop icon felt moved to contribute far more.

“I happened to be in London when I was going through the script,” Charli shared with Elle. “The weather was wintry and cold, and the sun was setting by 4 P.M., so I really channeled that atmosphere. I’d been spending a lot of time with John Cale’s music, and I was already very interested in experimenting with string arrangements. When the script came to me, it felt like the perfect opportunity to pursue that direction. It completely sparked my creativity. We put the album together quite rapidly, wrapping everything up in Paris this past October. The whole process felt incredibly natural.”
